Gun control not correct answer to school tragedy

Published: Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 2:33 p.m. CDT

My heart goes out to the parents of the Sandy Hook Elementary School children and the families of the adults also killed in this senseless attack.

The press and certain politicians seem to think that banning certain types of firearms would prevent this type of violence. If this line of thinking was actually correct, then it would follow that pencils misspell words, and that cars make people drive drunk or that spoons make people fat.

A firearm is nothing more than a tool. A hammer, in the hands of a mentally disturbed person, could do a great deal of damage to a person also. Does this mean society should ban hammers?

Responsible people have firearms for various reasons, including self defense in their home.  After all, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Banning any type of firearm just ensures that only criminals will have them. The real solution to these types of events is indeed complicated. Any type of gun control is really not the correct solution.

Better mental heath laws and facilities would be a good start.  Our politicians and others just need to calm down, determine the cause of these actions and attempt to provide the proper help for those people likely to break down and commit violent acts.

The faith community also needs to step up, especially Christian pastors. Instead of politically correct sermons, pastors need to speak to all sorts of society’s ills.

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 not only says to make disciples of all nations, but to teach people to obey what Jesus taught. He did not just teach about spiritual things, but also about everyday things that people have to deal with on a daily basis.

Whether you are a Christian or not, his teachings are correct and sound for any person. Perhaps if there was more Jesus in schools there would be no need for armed guards!
