Irish hold off hosts to win opener at Plano
PLANO — The Seneca Irish march on.
Sparked by 16 points from Conlan Callahan and 10 from Jimmy David, Seneca navigated its way past the Plano Reapers 47-38 in the final game of the championship bracket of the 50th Annual Plano Boys Basketball Christmas Classic Wednesday night.
Callahan and David made a pair of treys each against their Interstate Eight rival. Senior forward Chris Lee would up with eight points while also claiming 15 rebounds.
“Chris Lee played fantastic tonight,” said Seneca coach Russell Witte. “Some nights we need him on offense. Some nights we need him on defense. Tonight we needed his defense. He did an outstanding job tonight rebounding.”
The Irish, now 11-0, took a 10-6 lead in the opening quarter despite converting only 5-of-14 field goal attempts. Callahan had two baskets while senior guard Peyton Schrag, senior forward Brian Bergeson and Lee chipped in with one apiece. Schrag assisted on the latter two baskets.
David bomed in a pair of treys as the Irish went ahead 22-13 at the break.
Plano, which drops to 6-5, had one player in double figures. Senior guard Cody Dryden had a dozen points.
“Our defense played quite well, except at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth,” said Callahan.
“They went on a 5-0 run at the end of the third quarter,” said Witte. “I thought Plano did a fine job getting back in the game.”
