For the second consecutive meet, Morris Community High School’s speech team came away with a team victory.
The speech team competed at the Rochelle Speech Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Redskins placed first in the team sweepstakes with 377 points. Second place went to Wheaton North, Dekalb placed third, Hononegah took fourth, and rounding out the top five teams was Sterling. There were 21 teams total in the tournament.
Taking first place in the individual categories was Mary Wolverton, who was tournament champion in Humorous Interpretation. Second-place finishers were Kirsten Bridgemen and Kayla Haupt in Dramatic Duet Acting. In third place was Madison Rodgers in Prose Reading.
Fourth-place finishers were Kirsten Bridgemen in Dramatic Interpretation and Jessie Eastman in Oratorical Declamation. Fifth-place medals went to Luke Terhall in Extemporaneous Speaking and Robbi Hicks in Original Oratory. Sixth -place finishers were Sylvia Salinas and Nancy Serrano in Humorous Duet Acting, Alyssa Rogers in Radio Speaking and Sam Obrochta in Special Occasion Speaking.
In the Rochelle Novice finals, Tristan DeGrush finished fourth in Original Oratory and Yese Guzman placed third in Poetry Reading.
The Redskins junior varsity speech team competed Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Seneca Irish Invitational. The Redskins placed sixth overall. Individual placers were Jake Hesslau, fifth place, in Radio Speaking, and Grace Jewett, fifth place, in Original Oratory. Tournament champion in Prose Reading was Jessica Carey.
Andrea Gustafson coaches the Redskins speech teams. Curt Forbes and Denise Gaska are the assistant coaches.
Kade Bashor, Jacob O’Marrah and Madison Rodgers are the team captains. Carol Marie Gaska and Alyssa Rogers are the junior captains.
