Thomas Robert Winchell

AVA, Mo. — Mr. Thomas "Tom" R. Winchell, 77, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at his home in Ava, Mo.

Tom lived most of his life in Coal City and Braidwood. He passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife by his side.

Born April 25, 1935, in Joliet, Ill., Thomas was the son of Robert and Bessie (Brooke) Winchell.

Tom was a proud Marine veteran of the Korean War. He worked at the paper mill in Morris until it closed. He then went to work at Personal Products in Wilmington, where he retired.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors his whole life, trap shooting, hunting and fishing. He was an avid gun collector and expert. He was a member of the Top of The Ozarks shooting club. He was an accomplished marksman, winning many awards. He also enjoyed traveling in his RV and camping with friends and family.

Survivors include his wife of many years, Mary Ellen; her daughter; five children; two sisters; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents.

His body was donated to science per his request.
