Open house will honor area native returned from Afghanistan

NEWARK — Scott Fixmer, a 2002 graduate of Newark Community High School, recently returned home from deployment in Afghanistan, where he commanded a special operations aviation unit.

The Newark American Legion will host an open house in Capt. Fixmer’s honor at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, to provide an opportunity for the public to welcome Fixmer home.

Prior to this celebration, a motorcade procession will begin at the home of his parents, Scott and Lisa Fixmer in Yorkville and end at the Newark American Legion.

All are also welcome to participate in the procession.

Lineup for this motorcade procession will begin at noon Sunday at 1136 Homestead Dr., Yorkville.

Fixmer enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2003 and received a commission through the ROTC program at Western Illinois University in 2006. He completed flight school in 2007, and has received ratings in various rotary-wing, fixed-wing, and unmanned aircraft.

Capt. Fixmer’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, and Army Aviator Badge.

Fixmer currently resides at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., with his wife, Nikki, and their children, Sophia and Jacob.
