Theft conviction results in conditional discharge sentence

A Morris man facing a felony retail theft charge for stealing DVDs and shrimp from a local store was sentenced Jan. 10, 2013, in Grundy County Circuit Court.

Steven W. Gossett, 54, of 752 E. Jefferson St., Morris, pleaded guilty to the Class 4 felony and was placed on 30 months of conditional discharge. He also must pay $465 in court costs and fees.

According to court documents, Gossett’s sentence also included 72 days in jail, but he was given credit for having served 36 days and good time. His jail sentenced is reportedly completed.

Gossett was charged with taking possession of two DVDs and popcorn shrimp on Dec. 6, 2012, at the Morris Walmart. He was previously convicted of retail theft in Will County.

Charges of operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license were dismissed. He was arrested Sept. 19, 2012, heading northbound on Illinois 47 at the entrance ramp at Interstate 80.
