Third Degree
WILMINGTON — Coal City attempted 27 fewer field goals than Peotone Thursday but managed to win 48-44 in the third-place game of the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament at Wilmington.
Turnovers — the Lady Coalers had 21 to Peotone's 12 — and Peotone offensive rebounds helped give the Blue Devils a large number of extra chances. But while Coal City made over 45 percent of its attempts (16-of-35) from the field, the Blue Devils made just 17 of their 62.
The outcome still could have been different had the Lady Coalers not made eight free throws, in 12 attempts, in the final 1:28. Peotone attempted, and missed, just one foul shot during that time.
