OTTAWA — Seneca never led by more than 5 points at the end of any quarter in a 55-52 varsity boys basketball win over rival Marquette Tuesday night.

"We (played a) decent game against a lot of adversity tonight," Seneca coach Russell Witte said. "In the end, it shows a lot of character about our kids. We made the plays down the stretch."

With 4 made 3-pointers each, Jimmy David scored 18 points and Conlan Callahan had 14 to lead the Fighting Irish (19-3).

Seneca (6-14) lost 43-21 in the sophomore game.

COAL CITY — Nick Peters scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds and 6 assists Tuesday to lead the Coalers (13-9) in non-conference play. They got 15 points from Brennen Shetina, 10 form Jon West, 8 from Lane Cowherd and 7 from Joe Micetich.

"The only good thing about tonight's game is that we won," Coal City coach Brad Boresi said. "We turned the ball over way too much, missed too many free throws and did not move our feet on defense. Colin Anderson gave us a nice little spark off the bench, and we were able to pull away."

BRAIDWOOD — Mason Dransfeldt scored 13 points in defeat for Reed-Custer (17-5) Tuesday.

COAL CITY — Halliday had 8 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Coalers (7-2 in the Interstate Eight Conference) late Monday. They got 7 points from Borgetti, 6 from Shabani and 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals from Brittany Jezik.

"We had a tough offensive night tonight because we could not capitalize on our open looks. I thought we worked hard to get good lucks but things didn't bounce our way," Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. "Defensively, we played hard and kept battling all night, but Lisle was able to hit some key (free throws) down the stretch when they needed to. We have to learn from this, and be able to play better in those type of situations."
