Last week, I signed on as a co-sponsor of House Bill 997, which creates the Family and Personal Protection Act and would finally allow law-abiding residents the right to conceal and carry in Illinois. This legislation is long overdue.
The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to purchase, own and carry firearms without unreasonable government interference, and I believe that restricting these rights is a clear constitutional infringement. As a lifelong gun owner, I grew up learning the responsibilities of owning a firearm. For many across our community, owning firearms is a family tradition passed down from generation to generation.
I have spoken with constituents across our district at local events, over the phone or as I continue to go door-to-door who have expressed support for this legislation and I am grateful for their support.
I am proud to sponsor this legislation and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to finally pass this long overdue legislation.
