ROUNDUP: Six locals make state quarterfinals

CHAMPAIGN — Six local athletes claimed quarterfinal wins at the Individual Wrestling State Final Tournament at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Kenny Baldridge of Morris won a 120-pound Class 2A quarterfinal bout by fall in 3:28 over Leslie Williams of Cahokia. In the 152-pound Class 3A quarters, Corbett Oughton of Minooka won a 4-3 decision over Mitch Cook of Sandburg.

Four of the local quarterfinal victories came in the Class 1A tournament. Coal City 106-pounder Cody Minnick pinned Brandon McCullough of Erie in 2:23. Corey Jurzak of Coal City won a 12-1 major decision over Chance Teel of Sherrard at 112 pounds. Coal City 120-pounder Casey Brown won by fall in 4:34 over Nelson Baker of Byron. Seneca's Sage Friese won a 9-3 decision over Jake Snow of Newman at 126 pounds.

Morris 182-pounder Nik Countryman lost by fall in 5:16 to Jake Turk of Montini in the Class 2A quarters before pinning Conner Schmidt of Lincoln in 3:58 in first-round wrestlebacks. Minooka's Carson Oughton lost a 9-1 major decision to Justin Weber of Stevenson in Class 3A quarterfinal action but bounce back to pin Luke Gruszka of Schaumburg in 5:04 in first-round wrestlebacks.

Jake Czaja of Coal City lost a 4-2 decision to Brandon Lizler of Dakota in the 1A 145-pound quarters but bounced back to claim a 5-4 decision over Tyler Dagen of Vandalia in first-round wrestlebacks. In 170-pound wrestlebacks, Ryan Naples of Coal City claimed a 6-0 decision over Jarod Noel of Bismarck-Henning. Seneca's Brandon Webb lost a 16-9 decision to Kevin Roper of Carlyle in the 220-pound quarters and a 10-5 decision to Bobby Lincoln of Mercer County in first-round wrestlebacks.

MINOOKA — Behind a kill, a solo block and 6 points from Maddie Halliday and 7 points and an ace from Leah Campos, Coal City (10-6) advanced Thursday in the eighth-grade Illinois Valley Conference East tournament.

MVK def. Saratoga,
25-20, 27-25

SENECA — Katy Smith had 5 kills, a block, 2 points and an ace and Sabrina Baftiri 4 kills and 2 points Thursday for Saratoga (6-13) in the eighth-grade IVC West tournament.
