(MCT) — Two teenagers were killed Monday evening when the SUV they were traveling in struck a tree in Antioch, authorities said.

The teens had been traveling westbound in a Chevrolet Trailblazer in the 27000 block of Wilmot Road when the vehicle left the road about 7 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

The SUV traveled through a yard before hitting a tree, according to the sheriff's office.

Both the driver and his female passenger died on the scene.

The sheriff's office identified the driver as a 16-year-old from Antioch and the passenger as a 17-year-old female Lindenhurst resident, and it said the Lake County Coroner's Office would release further details after notifying family members.

Authorities are still investigating but believe weather contributed to the crash.
