(MCT) — An SUV failed to stop for stalled traffic and caused a fatal chain-reaction crash in Kane County that left an 11-year-old girl dead, authorities said.

The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday while cars were stopped for another crash on Route 64 west of Peplow Road in Virgil Township, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.

A Ford Expedition heading west ran into a Chevy Cavalier, which hit a Buick Lucerne. The Buick went off the road, but the Cavalier continued and hit the back of a Hyundai, the office said.

Three people were taken to a hospital and one of them died. Authorities shut down Route 64 between Fabris and Peplow roads – about 1.3 miles – for four hours.
