A 66-year-old Bridgeview man was killed in the early morning hours Saturday after a multi-vehicle crash that began with a driver traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 80.
Abed M. Bader was the victim in the accident that occurred just after midnight on eastbound I-80, near Nettle School Road. Grundy County Coroner John Callahan and Illinois State Police District 5 are investigating.
A green mini van was traveling west on the eastbound side of the highway when it hit Bader head-on. Bader was working for a medication delivery company and was heading home from a delivery in Spring Valley, according to the coroner’s press release.
Callahan said there was no evidence of braking from either vehicle.
Bader came to a stop in the eastbound lane and the mini van ended up in the median. As Bader’s vehicle was stopped, it was then hit by a semi truck.
The impact from the truck hitting Bader’s car shoved him about 200 feet down the roadway before coming to a rest in the median.
“I think it is reasonably safe to say he passed from the first collision (with the mini van),” said Callahan Monday.
The coroner described the crash as violent and said that extrication took more than an hour to complete.
Reports state the driver of the mini van was taken to Morris Hospital and then later transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center with spinal injuries. The truck driver was uninjured.
State police said Monday the driver of the mini van that was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway had not been formally charged yet because he was still hospitalized. Once released, he will be taken to Grundy County for arraignment.
The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was the emergency responder and Grundy County Sheriff’s Department also assisted.
