Ex-Bears guard Bortz loses home in fire

Published: Thursday, March 7, 2013 10:15 a.m. CST

Former Chicago Bears guard Mark Bortz lost his home in downstate Liberty to a fire on Wednesday morning.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports Bortz, the starting left guard on the Super Bowl XX championship team, and his wife Liza were not harmed but the home and all of its contents were completely destroyed. Bortz, who has a second home, has lived in rural Adams County for some time. He played for the Bears from 1983 to 1994.

The home was totally engulfed in flames when volunteer firemen arrived at about 1:30 a.m. Snow drifts prevented two engines from reaching the home. Responders were able to save other structures, including barns.

A fire spokesman said the Bortzes were awakened by smoke alarms and were able to escape the home. The spokesman told the Herald-Whig that he did not believe foul play was involved.
