Morris Hospital Foundation offering scholarships

Students living in Grundy County who are enrolled in coursework leading to an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing may apply for the Betty J. Sterritt Nursing Scholarship, established in memory of a beloved nurse who provided more than 40 years of service to Morris Hospital. This award is valued at $2,000 over two years and was established by Sterritt’s family with additional support from friends and colleagues, including a 5k Run/Walk held in her memory in the fall.

Undergraduate students pursuing education in any healthcare-related course of study may be eligible for the $1,000 Daniel Aaron Wolfer Healthcare Scholarship, established by the family of Daniel Wolfer.
The Foundation is also offering the Hugo Avalos Scholarship, named for a beloved physician who practiced in the area for more than 40 years. To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must reside in the state of Illinois and be accepted into, or currently enrolled in, an accredited medical school, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant program. The Hugo Avalos Endowed Scholarship reached the endowed level of $100,000 in 2010 with financial support  from Dr. Avalos’ family and friends, including the Morris Hospital medical staff and Grundy Bank. As an endowed scholarship, the funds will always be available and only the interest will be distributed for scholarships. 

The $1,000 Carol Harrington Endowed Scholarship and $1,000 Relucio Family Healthcare Scholarship are each available to students currently enrolled in a hospital-related health care curriculum at an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school. Applicants for these scholarships, as well as the Daniel Aaron Wolfer Healthcare Scholarship, must reside in one of the 18 communities served by Morris Hospital, which includes: Braceville, Braidwood, Channahon, Coal City, Dwight, Gardner, Kinsman, Marseilles, Mazon, Minooka, Morris, Newark, Ottawa, Ransom, Seneca, South Wilmington, Verona and Wilmington.

The Morris Hospital Foundation also provides three, $1,000 health care scholarships for Morris Hospital employees and their dependents. 

There is no limit to the number of scholarships an applicant can apply for. All applications include essay questions and require at least two letters of reference. Applications will be reviewed by the Morris Hospital Foundation’s scholarship committee.
