Thomas J. Ryan

Mr. Thomas J Ryan, 65, a long-time resident of Downers Grove, Ill., and a former resident of the Morris, Ill., area, passed away Monday evening, March 4, 2013, after a long Illness.

Born in Streator, Ill., on Nov. 8, 1947, the son of Thomas and Isabel (Walsh) Ryan, he graduated from Mazon Township High School with the Class of 1965. Mr. Ryan married his high school sweetheart, Jan (Ferguson) Ryan, originally from Morris, on Sept. 6, 1969.

She survives him with their three loving sons, Michael of Oklahoma City, Okla., Matthew (Annie) of Plainfield, Ill., and Tommy (Marla) of Schaumburg, Ill. His six precious grandsons, Brett, Alex, Drew and Nicholas Ryan of Plainfield, Brendan Ryan of Oklahoma City, and Zachary Ryan of Schaumburg, also survive him.

He also leaves behind three brothers, Dennis (Rita) of Dubuque, Iowa, Roy (Loretta) of Plainfield, and the Rev. Adam (John) Ryan of Conception, Mo.; one sister, Regina (Terrence) Smith of DeKalb, Ill.; his brother-in-law, Thomas (Kim) Ferguson of Goose Lake Township, Grundy County; a sister-In-law, Debbie (Leslie) Bell of Morris; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ryan was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Ryan-Nelson, in 2009.

In 1969, Mr. Ryan earned a bachelor of science degree in business management from Lewis University and, in 1973, an MBA from Northern Illinois University. He was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Study In School Business Management from NIU in 1977.

Mr. Ryan was employed by Hinsdale Public Schools, Dist. 181, as their business manager and treasurer for over 25 years.

He served in the United States Army at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., as a payroll specialist during the Vietnam conflict in 1970 and 1971.

He was a member of St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Church in Downers Grove.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Hallowell and James Funeral Home, 301 75th Street, Darien. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Interment will be private.
