Mrs. Josephine Ann “Joann” Sterritt Dummitt, formerly of Morris, Ill., passed away at her daughter’s home in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday, March 30, 2013, after battling with Alzheimer’s the last seven years.
Born on April 6, 1928, to James V. and Carmelite G. (Wood) Sterritt of Morris, Ill., she was raised and educated in Morris. She worked at Federal Paper Board and Company for over 34 years.
On April 9, 1951, Joann married Leslie J. Dummitt at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They lived their married life in Morris and had three children, Kathleen Dummitt of Gainesville, Fla., Mark (deceased) and Leslie (Eric) of Chicago, Ill.
She was a union member and fought for equal wages for women. She was very active in the Grundy County Democratic Party. Joann was a member and volunteer of the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice. She was president of the Morris Community Senior Citizen Center in Morris for several years.
Joann loved to travel and visited Guam, Ireland, Portugal, Italy and France with her cousin, Donald and Katherine Pannier. Joann was known for her cooking and baking pies. She played many different card games with family and friends.
Joann moved to Gainesville, Fla., in 2007 to live with her daughter.
Joann loved and was proud of each of her three grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jason) Poteet of Denver, Colo., and Laura Meyers and Robbie Meyers of Gainesville, Fla.; and her great-granddaughter, Grace Williams of Denver, Colo. She is also mourned by one brother, Gene “Buck” Sterritt of Pasadena, Calif., and a very good friend and caregiver, Doreen Applebee of Morris.
Joann was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Sara “Cisse;” her parents; her son,Mark Dummitt; her husband, Leslie J. Dummitt; three brothers, Donald, James (“Tony”) and Francis Sterritt; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
