Seneca comes out ahead on southern trip

Seneca went 2-1 on a snow-shortened spring break trip to southern Illinois last week in varsity baseball.

Brent Bergeson and Trent Nugent had 2 hits each for the Fighting Irish in a 7-5 loss to Goreville Wednesday at Hamilton County.

Later Wednesday, the Irish defeated Hamilton County 9-4 as Brandon Pasdertz pitched for the win and Trent Nugent, Logan Pifer and Ryan Schuetz each totaled 2 hits.

Seneca then defeated Carrier Mills 12-6 Thursday in a make-up game. Brian Bergeson pitched 4 innings of no-walk ball for the win and went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

SENECA — Josh Rohder (0-1) took the loss after striking out 4 in 7 innings pitched Wednesday. Brent Bergeson doubled and Logan Pifer stole 2 bases for Seneca (2-4) .

MINOOKA — Chris Costa went 3-for-3 with a double and Max Brozovich was 2-for-3 Wednesday for Minooka (4-2, 2-0) in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Winning pitcher Josh Mitchell allowed 1 earned run in 4 1/3 innings.

PLAINFIELD — Joe Carnagio had a pair of home runs and three RBI and Steve Wittenkamp added a homer and two RBI in the win Tuesday. Mitch Vogrin was the winning pitcher.

In the sophomore game, Minooka won 7-1 behind a single and three runs scored by Kenny Walsh. Miguel Ruiz threw a no-hitter in the win, striking out seven in seven innings. He walked two.

Central won the freshman game 6-2. Nick Stallion was the losing pitcher. At the plate, Matt Brozovich had a hit and an RBI.

DWIGHT — Ryan Gaston was the winning pitcher, getting the complete-game shutout. He allowed just one hit while striking out six. At the plate, Karsen Kopmann had three hits and two RBI and Chris Peck and Carson Banks had two hits each.

Matt Walker earned the pitching win for the Redskins, striking out 11 in five innings of work. Kendall Enger also pitched an inning in relief.

At the plate, Cody Niewinski was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Tyler Bordner was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

PAW PAW — Noah Boon, who took the loss, and Tyler Wiesbrook had 3 hits each Tuesday for the Norsemen (1-3, 1-1) in the Little Ten Conference game.

MINOOKA — Jackie Lilek went 3-for-5 with a walk-off single Wednesday for Minooka (3-0), which had Marissa Burns go 3-for-4. Lilek also pitched 4 2/3 innings wihtout allowing an earned run for the win.

SENECA — Nicole Pihl, who homered, and Lexi Trompeter each had 3 hits Wednesday for the Lady Irish (5-1). Kayla Haines pitched 4 scoreless innings for the win.

SENECA — Chelsie McCormick went 3-for-5 with a double and 3 runs Tuesday for the Lady Irish. Winning pitcher Pihl worked 5 innings, homered and joined Haines and Trompeter in finishing with 2 hits.

COAL CITY — Abby Olsen hit a 3-run home run and Gabby Bonic added a solo shot Wednesday for the Lady Coalers. Emily Aichele pitched for the win.

GARDNER — Abby Horrie went 2-for-3 with a home run and struck out 5 in 6 innings for the win Wednesday for Gardner-South Wilmington (2-2, 2-1) in the River Valley Conference. Sophie Barna was 2-for-4 with a double.

Dwight — Jamie Stanton had two doubles and an RBI and Alyssa Brownlee had a double, triple and two RBI in the win. Hannah Trainor was the winning pitcher.

NEWARK — Megan Malone and Melissa Schmidt of Newark (4-0) each went 2-for-4 to back winning pitcher Shelby Hoddy Wednesday.

GRADE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Nettle Creek vs. Newark

Newark swept 3 “A” games this season, with Ben Larson scored 24, 19 and 30 points to lead Nettle Creek. Connor McGlynn had 8 points in one loss and 4 in another, and Taggert Tesdal scored 6 for Nettle Creek in one of the games.

Nettle Creek split 2 “B” games with Newark, with Gunter Nusbaumer scoring 18 points and Connor Greve 13 in a 35-21 win and Nusbaumer scoring 11 points and Greve 6 in a 33-23 loss.
