The pickup truck involved in a Friday morning collision on Illinois 47, south of Dupont Road, burst into flames shortly after the driver was able to exit the vehicle. The Chrysler Sebring involved also sustained heavy damage in the crash.

A northbound pickup truck and a southbound car collided on Illinois 47 south of Morris Friday morning, resulting in injuries to the three occupants of the vehicles.

The driver of the car, 46, was airlifted from the accident scene to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. She is described as alert.

Her passenger, the driver’s 19-year-old daughter, was taken by ambulance to Morris Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Both are residents of Naperville.

The driver of the pickup truck, 23, of Coal City, was also transported to Morris Hospital.

According to Sgt. Paul Clampitt of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, the driver of the pickup truck was traveling north in the southbound lane of Illinois 47, between Illinois 113 and Dupont Road, and crashed into a southbound Chrysler Sebring just after 10 a.m. Friday,

The driver of the pickup told police that he had fallen asleep.

The car spun into a ditch following the collision, while the pickup continued north and flipped onto the driver’s side, skidding into the ditch several yards down. It burst into flames soon after.

There is no indication yet as to how fast the cars were traveling.

Rachel Kane and Chris Shelly, both of Gardner, were each driving north on Illinois 47 when the crash occurred and said they helped the driver of the pickup get out of his vehicle just prior to it becoming fully engulfed in fire.

Kane said she saw a deep gash on the pickup driver’s leg.

Shelly said the passenger of the Sebring was able to leave the car on her own, but the driver was stuck inside and had to be extricated by firefighters.

Illinois 47 was blocked off between Dupont and Illinois 113 to allow the LifeStar helicopter to land to take the woman to the hospital.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.
