Minooka weighing possible alumni football game

When Marsha Williams attended Minooka Community High School, from which she graduated in 1999, she was active in the marching band and color guard.

Football games were special for Williams as an MCHS student. Since she still lives in the area, she had the idea of trying to recreate them.

"I've noticed that some other schools, like (Joliet Catholic Academy) and Joliet Central, have alumni games, and it made me a little jealous that Minooka never did anything like that," Williams said.

Because of Williams and some of her fellow MCHS graduates, Minooka may soon do something like that. They are organizing an alumni football game, with hopes of playing later this year. A meeting to discuss the potential game is planned for April 24 at the Three Rivers Library branch in Minooka. There is even hope of the game featuring a Minooka team playing a group of Morris alums.

The process that resulted in the meeting being scheduled began last November, when MCHS grad Neil Craig created a Minooka alumni football group on Facebook. The group now has over 100 members.

By February, organization of the game had stalled. Craig admitted on the Facebook page that he had "dropped the ball" on the project due to being busy with other commitments and asked if anyone else was interested in taking the lead. Several weeks later, Williams essentially assumed that role.

"I messaged him last week and said, "Hey, I'll help you with this. It looks like you need help,'" Williams said on April 9. "Him and I have been communicating some since. Nothing is set in stone at this point."

Williams says she has helped plan charity events in the past, and the hope is for admission to be charged at the game, with the proceeds going to charity. Not only will football players participate on the field, she hopes, but there also will be an alumni-composed band along with cheerleaders.

And, Williams hopes, there will be a familiar opponent.

"We've talked to some people," she said. "My friend, Stephanie Benson, went to Morris. We told her about the Minooka alumni game and she got in contact with some former Morris football players. Some of them responded and expressed interest. It's more or less just an idea at this point. Hopefully we can make it an actual reality."

Williams says that she has been in contact with, and received paperwork such as insurance information from, MCHS. A date for the game has not been chosen, though Williams says that ideally one this fall can be selected which will work for the school and the participants.
