Musicians, including the church’s pastor — Rev. Dr. Roy A. Backus (center on saxophone) — perform during Jazz Worship Sunday in 2012, an event that will be reprised during worship services at First Presbyterian Church in Morris on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28.

The public is invited to attend two special Jazz Worship Services at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Jackson St., Morris, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 28.

The Rev. Dr. Roy A. Backus is the pastor of the church. Kim Struck is the music director and Jill Kopczick is the pianist.

At the Saturday evening service, there will be a saxophone ensemble made up of Pastor Roy Backus, Hannah Buchanan, Jeff Kirkolis, and Chad Taylor.  There will also be a rhythm section, including Jill Kopczick on keyboard, Pam Breuning on bass, Patrick Stevens on guitar, and Bill Walsh on percussion.

The groups will provide instrumental accompaniment to vocal music, including traditional hymns, as well as Latin, Swing, and Jazz songs.

The Sunday morning worship service will welcome a Big Band sound with Don Stinson, Steve Rogers, and Andrea Koch on trumpets; Del Bergesun, Andrew Davis, and Chris Bayer on trombones; Pastor Roy Backus, Chad Taylor, and Patrick Wilson on saxophones; Jill Kopczick on keyboard; Robert Ferraris on bass; Scott Kindelspire on percussion; and Patrick Stevens on guitar.

The music will include jazz arrangements of traditional hymns with choral jazz renditions of Spirituals and congregational hymns in Latin and Swing style.  The Chancel Choir, directed by Kim Struck, will sing at the Sunday morning service.

The music will be selected from Amazing Grace, Down by the Riverside, Why Not Be Jazzed?  We Welcome You, How Firm a Foundation, Swing Down Chariot, Let us Break Bread Together, Old Time Religion, Guide My Feet, Celebrate Today and other renditions and congregational selections.

Everyone at the First Presbyterian Church invites everyone to attend one or both of these special Worship services.  There will be a coffee hour with refreshments following the Sunday morning Worship service.
