ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mr. Loyd Joseph Wicks, 94, of Ann Arbor, Mich., passed peacefully Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Arbor Hospice after a long life and a brief illness.

He was born May 1, 1919, in Seneca Ill., third child of seven, to Arthur and Bertha (Sand) Wicks. Two siblings survive, sister June Johnson of Marseilles, Ill., and brother Kent (Joan) Wicks of Peru, Ill.

He is also survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances (Richardson) Wicks; a son, Kevin (Laurie) Wicks, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Wicks, of Ann Arbor; a daughter, Karen Wicks of Orlando, Fla.; and grandchildren Greg Wicks and Erica Meszaros (David) of Ann Arbor, and Joseph Wicks (Abby) of Northville, Mich., and Alison Wicks of Portland, Ore.

Son Barry (Linda) Wicks preceded him in death in May 2009.

Loyd was an active member of the First United Methodist Church; an avid golfer for many years at Ann Arbor Country Club; a volunteer for several local food banks, where he became the substitute grandfather for many UM students. He was interested in everything – curious, inquisitive and kind.

He retired from his manufacturer’s representative position at Illinois Water Treatment Company (now U.S. Filter) in 2001, after 54 years.

He was a World War II veteran, leaving the service in 1946 as a second lieutenant.

A Memorial Celebration of Life service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor at 1 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Donations in lieu of flowers to the First United Methodist Church or Arbor Hospice (arborhospice.org) would be appreciated.
