Area Roundup: Morris baseball wins at Dixon

DIXON — Brian Henry returned from injury to pitch 3 clean innings and Morris defeated Dixon 12-1 in 5 innings Saturday in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East varsity baseball.

Now 6-0, Henry allowed no runs, walks or hits and struck out 6 for Morris. Trevor Lines was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead the Redskins offensively as they had Grant Schluntz go 2-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs, Ryan Borgstrom go 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and 2 runs and Matt Bernickus go 2-for-4 with an RBI.

“We continue to come out and put the ball in play hard and put the pressure on the defense. It’s nice when you can put up runs every inning,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “’Bubba’ (Henry) did a great job in his first game back. We are very happy with how he looked.”

Morris also won 11-0 in 5 innings at the junior varsity level, improving to 4-0. For Morris, Bernickus was 3-for-3 with a double, Kade Bashor was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Matt Darlington was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and Nick Kelly, Christian Niewinski, Ricky Pelnarsh, Eric Robinson and John Struck had hits.

At the sophomore level, the Redskins swept, 8-1 and 9-5. Gabe Sajnaj pitched a 2-hitter over 7 innings in the first game, with Thomas Cheshareck going 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and Jake McDonald, who stole home, and Cody Niewinski adding 2 hits. Matt Walker went 2-for-4 with a home run and Colton Akre and Jordan Miracle doubled in the second game. Thomas Dabney pitched for the win.

MATTOON — Brad Liddleton took the loss early Saturday despite giving up no earned runs and fanning 7. Austin McLuckie, who scored a run, and Joe Quinn, who had an RBI, had 2 hits each for the Coalers, and Joe Micetich added a hit.

MATTOON — Lane Cowherd had 2 hits later Saturday for the Coalers (10-14), who got a hit and an RBI each from McLuckie, DJ Budde, Alex Wills and Dylan Hakey during a 6-run third inning. Quinn got the win and Shetina the save as the duo allowed just 1 earned run while striking out 5.

GARDNER — Mike Goodwin took the loss in the first game and Cody Harvey did so in the second Saturday for Gardner-South Wilmington.

Tyler Bordner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Walker was 2-for-3 with a walk Thursday for the Redskins.

STREATOR — Nicole Pihl went 2-for-3 and hit her 53rd career home run, leaving her 1 shy of the IHSA record, in the first game Saturday. Also for the Lady Irish (24-6), who scored 7 times in the seventh inning, Chelsie McCormick was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and 2 stolen bases, and Pihl pitched all 7 innings for the win.

Brittany Crowley was Seneca’s lone multiple hitter, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, in the second game. Kayla Haines pitched all 7 innings, allowing just 1 earned run, for the win.

BOYS TENNIS

NIB12 Tournament

ROCHELLE — The Morris doubles tandem of Noah Doss and Mark Kijowski finished third Friday and Saturday. They defeated teams from La Salle-Peru and Sterling.
