Area Roundup: Newark baseball wins regional game

The Newark baseball team beat Serena 9-5 at the Putnam County Regional on Thursday, getting seven solid innings out of Joe Hughes.

Hughes allowed just two earned runs in the victory.

At the plate, Matt Eike was 3-for-4 with a double and Mitchell Schmidt was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Dwight 5,

Prairie Central 1

The Trojans won behind the pitching of Ryan Gaston. He allowed seven hits while walking two and striking out three in seven innings of work.

At the plate, Aaron Wylie had three hits and an RBI while Jake Wardell, Austin Gantzert and Chris Peck had two hits each.

Morris 14,

Rock Island 2, 5 innings

Morris got its 25th win of the season by beating Rock Island by the run rule.

“It was a good day for us all around. We had solid pitching, our defense made plays and we continue to string hits together and put the ball in play hard.”

Preston Miracle was the winning pitcher. He went four innings allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four.

At the dish, Miracle was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI; Matt Bernickus was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI; Grant Davis was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI; Jake Capko 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Austin Conrod 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the sophomore game, Morris won 10-8.

Kendall Enger was the winning pitcher for Morris. He went five innings and Emmet Chouinard came on to save it by going the final two.

Jake McDonald was 3-for-4 and Thomas Cheshareck was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. 

Ryan Niewinski had two hits, including a triple.

Minooka 9,

Plainfield North 5

The Indians clinched the Southwest Prairie Conference championship by beating the Tigers.

Three different pitchers combined for the victory on the mound.

At the plate, Neal Tyrell had four hits, including a home run; Joe Carnagio was 4-for-4 with two RBI; Steve Wittkamp 2-for-4; Tyler Desmarias 2-for-4 and Max Brozovich had a hit and two RBI.

In the sophomore game, Minooka beat North 14-10 with Brad VanAsdlen getting the mound win.

The younger Indians also are SPC champs.

The day before, the sophs lost to North 3-2 despite a solid effort by Cole Thompson on the hill. Sean Bell and Kenny Walsh had two hits each.

The Minooka freshman beat North 9-2 on Thursday behind Blaine Meadors’ mound effort but lost to the Tigers 4-2 the day before.
