The Morris Rotary Club gave out $6,000 in scholarships this year to both Morris Community High School and Grundy Area Vocational students.
The selected students received their scholarships during a ceremony at the school last month, but the Morris students were also recognized during the Morris Rotary meeting June 4 at Chapin’s Restaurant.
“We’re approaching $200,000 in scholarships in our 40 years of doing this,” said Jim Wright, Rotary Scholarship Committee chairman.
Each student received a $1,000 scholarship. The Morris high school recipients were Rachel Neuhalfen, Sylvia Salinas, Harmony Alford and Nancy Serrano. The two GAVC recipients were students of Minooka Community High School: Sarah Lindmark and Bryanna Pena.
“I feel so lucky to have won. It means a lot to me,” said Neuhalfen, who is going to Saint Louis University as a pre-med major.
Wright said the Rotary Club received numerous applicants for the scholarships and, as always, it was a difficult decision.
“I was very surprised with everyone that was interested that I got it,” said Serrano. “It’s quite an honor.”
Serrano is starting at Joliet Junior College in the fall to study nursing.
“We all know and love each other. It’s a scary thought this is the last time we will be all together,” said Alford at the Rotary meeting. Alford is going to study Computer Science.
Salinas is going to Augustana in the fall to study communications and plans to study abroad.
To continue to raise money for the Rotary Club’s scholarships and its other charities, the organization is going to be a beneficiary to one of this year’s Morris Cruise Nights.
Rotarians are currently selling 50/50 raffle tickets to be pulled at the July 13 Morris Cruise Night in downtown Morris. Half the money will go to Rotary for its charities and the other half to the winner. The winner does not have to be present to win.
Morris Cruise Nights are held from 6 to 9 p.m. the second Saturday of the month in the downtown, where hundreds of antique and unique vehicles will be on display.
Pick up a 50/50 ticket from any Morris Rotarian or call or visit Morris Dermatology, (815) 941-5160, 1499 Lakewood Dr., Unit A, Morris.
