Thanks for helping to ‘Stamp Out Hunger!’

Published: Friday, June 21, 2013 10:47 a.m. CDT

To the Editor: Thanks to all those who donated to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 11.

In Morris, the letter carriers collected over 5,500 pounds of food, which was a much larger amount than the 4,300 pounds collected last year.

It’s not too late to donate – just drop your donations off at We Care’s office at 520 W. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

This annual food drive takes place just in time to help stock up in preparation for the busiest time of the year for our food pantry – the summer months. When children from low-income families are home all day long, they are not getting the free lunches they would normally get from school, which creates an additional strain on the family’s food budget. That’s why we find the demand for our food pantry services increases dramatically in the summer. The donations collected last month will help us meet this need.

We Care would especially like to acknowledge the contribution of Debra Sanders. Debra coordinated the food drive on behalf of the Letter Carriers and used one of her vacation days that Saturday in order to help get the food to the office. This is the third year that Debra has made this commitment and she lends not only her hand, but a healthy dose of sunshine as well!

We are so grateful to the Morris Letter Carrier’s union, the Morris Post Office and to our volunteers, Terri Gilmore of Terri Gilmore Insurance, and Jaymee Cole, who spent their afternoon unloading and sorting food.

Also, a big thank you to all of We Care’s regular pantry volunteers who helped us put away all the food the following week!
