The Morris Theatre Guild, Inc. is taking reservations for its summer musical-drama production of “Rent.” The books, lyrics and music are by Jonathan Larson.
Based loosely on Puccini’s, “La Boheme,” “Rent” follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city.
They include Mark, a filmmaker and the narrator of the story, his former girlfriend, Maureen, a performance artist; Maureen’s lover, Joanne, a public interest lawyer; Mark’s roommate Roger, a musician; Mimi, an exotic dancer, with whom Roger falls in love; Tom Collins, a computer genius; Collins’ lover, Angel, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former member of the group who, after marrying into a wealthy family, has become their landlord. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provide the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. The cast consists of both veteran and new guild members, including Leland Curl of Coal City, Stephanie Aiello Allen and Mike Sallade, both of Joliet, Dustin Mann of Kankakee, Marjorie Struck, Courtney Washington, Adrianna (Danni) Williamson, Trent Zelko, all of Morris, Katie Orsini of Peru, Michael Ellis, Rachel Johnson, and Lizzie Mladic, all of Seneca, Justin Ongenae of Shorewood, Nico Ascension Garcia of South Chicago Heights, and Chris Cummings of Wilmington. The production is directed by Derek Buckley of Oglesby, and assisted by Kelly Johnson of Seneca.
“Rent” opens on Friday, July 19, 2013. The production continues on July 20, 21, 26, 27, and closes on Sunday, July 28, 2013. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Both Sunday matinee performances will begin at 2:30 p.m.
