Changes bring questions

MDH provides some of the answers

Morris Daily Herald General Manager Bob Wall on Tuesday announced some significant changes in store come Aug. 20 for the Morris Daily Herald.

For those who may have missed the front-page announcement, there are two main changes — both aimed at making the newspaper more reader friendly to our subscribers and business partners.

The first of those changes is that a more compact, easier-to-handle tabloid-sized Morris Daily Herald will replace the current broadsheet edition. With the size change will come a complete redesign and the introduction of several news features.

Additionally, the Morris Daily Herald will change its method of distribution, working with several local post offices in the area to ensure same-day delivery of the newspaper through the mail.

As you can imagine, as Bob had requested, he received much feedback from our readers about what is to come. Much of what he heard — and what could be derived from comments on the Morris Daily Herald’s web and Facebook pages — could be reduced down to a handful of recurring questions.

First and foremost is the question, “When will we receive our paper when it moves to mail? Will they arrive a day late?”

The short answer to this is that you will continue to receive Tuesday’s newspaper on Tuesday, Wednesday’s newspaper on Wednesday, etc.

We are using the postal service’s same day mail. The paper you receive will be delivered to the post office that day for delivery that day.

Just as was the case for today’s paper, the paper you receive each day will be created, edited and finalized late the night before and printed in the early morning hours.

A delivery truck will then drop the newspapers at the Morris — and various other — post offices for distribution that day.

Another frequent question has been, “How will I purchase a copy if I’m not a home delivery subscriber?” The short answer would be the same way that you do now.

Our newsstand locations are not changing. You will be able to purchase a single copy of the Morris Daily Herald at the same locations that you do today. The only change in distribution is the transition from carrier delivery to mail delivery.

Another question has been, “What kind of new features will we see in the paper?”

Among the new offerings will be additional advice columns — including one addressing medical concerns; more and different puzzles, including Celebrity Cipher; a Bridge column; a handful of different comic strips that should have wider appeal; and the “Daily Dish,” which will provide an entertainment-related story each day.
