CHANNAHON — An Arlington Heights man was killed in a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 55, near Channahon, Wednesday morning, according to Illinois State Police.

John R. Hoeppel, 61, was pronounced dead at 4:01 p.m. at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner's office.

The accident occurred just a week after another accident on Interstate 55 claimed the life of a 68-year-old Roselle woman and sent others to the hospital.

Around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Hoeppel was the driver in a vehicle that was stopped in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 when another passenger vehicle could not stop in time and rear-ended Hoeppel. Hoeppel's car was pushed under the trailer of a semi-truck in front of him.

Hoeppel was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Hoeppel was also taken to Presence Saint Joseph with minor injuries. The collision resulted in a third car being hit.

State Police are currently investigating the accident.
