The Morris Community High School District 101 school board Monday reviewed the accomplished and in-progress goals of its strategic plan.

The district keeps a Strategic Plan Scorecard, which lists objectives, their specifics and whether they are in the planning, progress or completed stages. Superintendent Dr. Pat Halloran discussed these steps with the board.

There are five themes in the plan: teaching and learning, human resources, extra and co-curricular activities, communication, and finance.

For teaching and learning, the goal is to provide ongoing evaluation and expansion of balanced curriculum opportunities to meet the needs and diversities of the school’s learning community.

One of the objectives of this goal was to inform parents and students about the implementations of the Common Core Standards. An informational guide was formed and posted to the school website completing the objective, said Halloran.

An additional objective was to create a student tutoring network, which was done. One to two tutors per class period are available in the Academic Resource Center. There is a list of 10 to 12 tutors kept.

Under the human resources theme, the goal is to provide students and teachers with academic programs to enhance teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

One objective that continues to be worked on is to assess the guidance department to improve college and career counseling. A needs assessment survey is under way to analyze current program strengths and weaknesses. The outcome is to create a guidance services improvement plan.

One of the objectives for the most recently added theme, extra and co-curricular activities, was completed: the creation of a mission statement for district activities. Now an improvement plan is being created.

The communications theme has met two of its objectives: to increase community awareness of “MCHS happenings,” and continuous improvement of school improvement committees.

To do this, articles published about the school district have increased by 15 percent, as have the social media followers and website traffic.

The finance objectives are still in the “in progress” stage. One objective includes looking for corporate sponsorships and advertisement to generate revenue. The administration plans to develop a report on what has been raised so far, the use of these dollars, and how to increase these revenues.

The district will make the entire strategic plan, its goals and accomplishments, accessible online within in the next several weeks, said Halloran.
