James Simmons Jr.

Mr. James “Jim” Simmons Jr., 49, of Morris, Ill., passed away unexpectedly in the Morris Hospital Emergency Department on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013.

Jim was born Aug. 18, 1963, in Booneville, Miss., the son of the late James Sr. and Edith Marie (Hatfield) Simmons. He was raised and educated in Cicero, Ill., and attended Marquette High School in Hinsdale, Ill.

He married Cheryl DeChausse of Morris on April 28, 1990.

Jim served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1984. He was employed as a club supervisor for Advance Sales and Marketing at Sam’s Club in Joliet, Ill. Jim was “considered one of our best bosses” by his employees.

Jim loved the Lord and was a Member of the 58th Ave Baptist Church in Cicero. He was also a member of the American Legion in Morris.

Jim enjoyed fishing, morel mushroom hunting, and cooking. Jim was a prankster, loved entertaining people, and “always had a smile.” He truly loved to be around people, but his true love was spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren.  

Surviving is “the love of his life,” his wife, Cheryl; four children, James “Jay” Simmons III of Minooka, Ill., Anthony Ray (Nichole) Simmons of Mazon, Ill., Tiffany Lynn (Derrick) Simmons of Minooka, and Jacob Asa Simmons of Morris; his two “princesses,” granddaughters Marlee “Macky” Marie Nugent and Harper Marie Simmons.

Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Beverly J. Bradley of Morris; sisters-in-law Carin (Perry) Jourdan of Sandoval, Ill., and Lori (Dave) Nordon of Riverview, Fla.; three sisters, Patty (Rex) Layne of Mazon, Betty (Eric) Binder of Morris, and Donna (Ray) Ristich of Minooka; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr., on May 27, 1993, and Edith Marie on Aug. 29, 2011; and one sister, Lisa Marie Simmons, at birth.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W. Washington St., Morris. A celebration of Jim’s life will be at 10 a.m. Friday morning, Aug. 16, at the funeral home, with Pastor Den W. Karrow officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Morris Color Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
