Warriors varsity earns season-opening victory

The Morris Warriors youth football team opened up its fall season this past weekend, defeating Bourbonnais at the varsity and junior-varsity levels but losing to the Bears at the Lightweight and Super-Lightweight divisions.

Varsity

Bourbonnais 0

The Varsity Warriors had a strong start to the season with a shutout over the Bourbonnais Bears.

The offense was led by quarterback Danny Borgstrom and receiver Marques Kjellesvik. The passing attack resulted in 137 yards of offense and three of the four touchdowns.

The defense also played well and held the Bears scoreless. Defensive leaders were Alonzo Enriques with five tackles and Nathaniel Baldwin who had two interceptions and a pass break-up.

Junior Varsity

The JV team also started their 2013 regular season with a shutout.

The Warriors moved the ball well on the ground, amassing 152 yards rushing. The rushing leader was Kevin Countryman with 67 yards on nine carries behind strong blocking from the offensive line.

The JV defense also held the Bears scoreless with solid play from all. Defensive standouts were Chatten Dryfhout with seven tackles and Austin Hastings with an interception returned for a touchdown.

Lightweights

Bourbonnais 12,

The Lightweight Warriors fought hard but came up just short.

Quarterback Bryce Mahnke and running back Tristan Martin led the offense on a strong 47-yard opening drive which came up just shy of the end zone prior to turning the ball over on downs.

The sturdy defense was led by Evan Briones and Zach Romak with 11 tackles combined.

Super-lightweights

Bourbonnais 13,

Morris 6

The Super-light Warriors battled the Bears, but lost a close game.

Broc Grogan gained 100 yards rushing on 14 attempts behind the blocking of the offensive line.

Sam Reddinger headed the defensive side with nine tackles and a fumble recovery.
