Navy awards Landers full scholarship

Coal City grad completes orientation program

Coal City High School graduate Zackary Landers was the recipient of a four-year scholarship to the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

COAL CITY – Zackary Landers, a 2013 graduate of Coal City High School, was awarded a full four-year scholarship to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Landers reported for the Midshipman Orientation Program the week of Aug. 19. The program included intense physical training, orientation to Naval procedures, a sailing day and a day at the shooting range.

Landers was awarded the singular award of the program. He was awarded the “Honor Candidate” title for outstanding physical and mental preparedness and leadership during the training.  Additionally, he was acknowledged for being the “Top Shot” for accuracy at the shooting range.

Landers is the son of Budd and Laura Landers and brother of Clare Landers, of the Goose Lake area.
