LISBON, Ill. – Mrs. Elma Louise (Christian) Thompson, 91, of Lisbon, Ill., passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Morris Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at West Lisbon Church, rural Newark, Ill., with the Rev. Steven Lombardo II officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
Elma was born June 5, 1922, in Kendall County to Sherman and Edna (Starr) Christian. She married Adolph Thompson on Aug. 31, 1946. He preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1995.
Elma helped her husband farm in Nettle Creek Township and was a substitute teacher for many schools in Grundy and Kendall counties. She was well-known for her kringlas and molasses cookies. Her ministry was visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes.
She is survived by three sons, Andrew (Kristi) Thompson of Yorkville, Ill., Sheldon (Nancy) Thompson of Newark and David (Suzanne) Thompson of Seneca, Ill.; two daughters, Gloria (Rollin) Varness of Morris, Ill. and Lois (Jerry) Whalen of rural Seneca; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, with one more due in October.
She is also survived by a sister, Gladys (Arnold) Abens of Waconia, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Clara Norris of rural Minooka, Ill., and Alice (Alden) Thompson of Morris. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Marian Thorsen.
