JOLIET – In honor of the feast month of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of the University of St. Francis and the patron saint of animals, the university’s Alumni & Parent Relations Office will host three October events for animal lovers.

From Oct. 1 through Oct. 18, an animal supply collection drive to benefit Joliet Township Animal Control will be conducted.

JTAC is a shelter for stray or unwanted dogs and cats that are available for adoption.

The collection wish list includes kitten and cat food (canned and dry), kitty litter, puppy and dog food (dry), rawhides, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, dish soap, bleach, Pinesol, sponges, plastic grocery bags and newspapers.

Donations will be accepted in the Alumni & Parent Relations Office in USF’s Tower Hall, 500 Wilcox St., Joliet. All are invited to make donations.

A pet blessing will bring people and animals together at 10 a.m. Oct. 5, at the Joliet Township Animal Control center, 2807 McDonough St., Joliet. The community is invited to attend.

Immediately following. until 1 p.m., Lost Dogs Illinois will offer free microchips for the first 50 animals that need them, with a limit of two per family.

JTAC will also offer microchips at the discounted rate of $15 to any animal that doesn’t get a free one.

Registered microchips are the safest and quickest way to return a lost pet to its family.

Finally, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19, USF alumni are invited to participate in a day of hands-on service at JTAC. USF alumni will help with dog-walking, adoptions and more.

An RSVP is necessary for this event; please call 877-811-ALUM or email alumni@stfrancis.edu.
