Heartland Blood Center looking for donors

Heartland Blood Centers has an immediate need for blood donors, including at the organization’s Morris Blood Donor Center.

The local center received no blood donations Tuesday and few Wednesday. Anyone available to make a donation is encouraged to make an appointment or stop in.

“It is not typical to have shortages in October because usually our inventory is stable at this point with high school blood drives and the college season,” said Jill Moeggenberg, spokeswoman for Heartland.

An urgent need exists for 600 blood and platelet donations. Heartland Blood Centers is issuing an emergency appeal to encourage all donors to give blood.  

Type O and Type B blood donations are needed, as well as platelet donations.

To schedule an appointment call 800-7TO-GIVE. The Morris center is at 273 East U.S. Route 6 in the plaza across the street from Wal-Mart. Walk-ins also are welcome.

Public blood drives also will be Saturday and Monday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Morris Community High School, 1000 Union St., and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Morris Hospital, 150 W. High St. Walk-ins are welcome.

Heartland Blood Centers has been the sole supplier of blood to Morris Hospital since 1985.
