PEOTONE – For the second straight week, a disastrous third quarter doomed Coal City football to defeat in Interstate Eight Conference Large.
Coal City lost to Peotone, 33-26, after its 13-6 halftime lead turned into a 27-13 deficit by the end of the third quarter. The 3-4 Coalers must now win out, and get help, to make the playoffs.
On the second Coal City possession, a 35-yard pass from Brennen Shetina to Lane Cowherd got the Coalers deep into Peotone territory.
They settled for a 25-yard Cowherd field goal.
Coal City then forced a second straight Peotone punt, but the Coalers fumbled, with Peotone’s Trever Zeibert recovering.
Three plays later, Bobby Rapson broke off a 35-yard run to the end zone for a 6-3 lead early in the second.
The Coalers answered less than three minutes later. Passes from Shetina to Peters for 20 yards and Cowherd for 10 moved them down the field. Shetina then easily scored on a 2-yard run.
After punts by both teams, a Brad Littleton interception allowed the Coalers to add to their lead just before halftime.
A 27-yard Cowherd field goal made it 13-6.
Peotone got a 34-yard kickoff return from Bobby Rapson to begin the third quarter.
Rapson later scored on a 24-yard run, and the game was tied less than four minutes into the half.
After Cowherd missed left on a 44-yard field goal try, the Blue Devils stormed into Coaler territory with a 38-yard pass from Brandon Wenzel to Andrew Marganski and a 34-yard Rapson run on successive plays. Rapson then punched the ball in from 5 yards out.
The Coalers’ next offensive play was a fumble, which Peotone’s Clay Dargert recovered. Peotone capitalized with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Wenzel to a wide-open Weibert and led 27-13 late in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Peotone added an insurance touchdown on a 2-yard Bobby Rapson run before Shetina scored on a 5-yard run and, in the final seconds, hit Cowherd for a 42-yard touchdown pass.
