Don Dix of Morris was honored as Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starter of the Month for September.
Dix joined the Morris Hospital team in 1997 as a part-time courier after a 37-year career at Caterpillar. In this role, he moves goods and supplies between the hospital and its more than 12 off-campus locations. In between routes, hospital couriers assist with laminating, copying, making signs and paper pads, and metering the outgoing mail.
Dix was nominated for the award by fellow courier Chris Finch. The nomination form included signatures of support from more than 20 other employees.
“Every day, Don is a huge asset to our department,” wrote Finch. “He is always covering shifts and doing whatever is necessary to help out in our department. Whenever he is asked to help, he always does without any complaint. I have worked with him for 10 years, and it has always been this way. If I could, I would nominate him for Fire Starter of the Year.”
Morris Hospital Materials Services Manager Dennis Perdue echoes Finch’s sentiments, calling Dix a “great guy.”
“Don comes in and does his thing no matter what,” Perdue said. “He’s dependable and always pleasant. I’ve often told him I wish I could clone him.”
In early civilizations, fire starters were the individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. As Fire Starter of the Month, Dix received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a special “Fire Starter” lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month. Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is one of the largest employers in Grundy County with more than 960 employees.
