It's time again for T.G.'s Ten

Since it’s been a while, it’s time for a T.G.’s Ten.

1) In the better late than never category, condolences and sympathies to the family of Denny ‘Corn’ Thorson on his recent passing. Thorson was a standout baseball player at Morris Community High School and a standout fastpitch player for decades for the Morris Merchants. Corn hit one of the most dramatic home runs I have ever seen. It came in the 1980 state tournament and won the game against Pinckneyville in the semifinal game in which the Merchants went on to win the tournament.

Rest in peace.

2) Well, the high school football season has about wound down and, were it not for the remarkable run by the Seneca Fighting Irish, we’d have had no playoff teams this year. All three of the other area teams – Morris, Minooka and Coal City – have been hard to watch at times this year.

It will certainly be weird not watching the Redskins in the playoffs this year.

3) At least the Morris soccer team is having a season to remember. On Tuesday night, the Redskins honored the nine seniors on this historic team. That includes: Jose Salinas, Matt Thayer, Brian Vasquez, Chava Villanueva, Nestor Rodriguez, Kyle Monk, Steve Galbadon, David Pacheco and Josh Enlow.

Hopefully losing all those solid senior players won’t hurt the team next year like it did the football team this year.

4) I have been following the NFL the most of the four major sports these days. In fact, I went to Indianapolis a month ago to watch the Miami Dolphins play the Colts. I went with Vikings fan Dave and Colts fan Murph and saw the Dolphins win, 24-20. Since then Dolphins fan T.G. has seen the Dolphins lose two straight.

Sometime the more things change, the more they stay the same. So much for that promising 3-0 start.

5) Speaking of the Colts, saw former Joliet Catholic Academy tight end Colby Fleener catch four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown that day. It was the first time I saw him play live since he lost twice in a Hilltoppers uniform right here in Morris back in the early 2000s.

Actually, I thought that was kind of cool having the chance to watch a pro football player and being able to say I saw him before he made the big time.

6) Speaking of the fall season, it never ceases to amaze me how fast that particular time of year goes. Golf season is over for the locals and soccer regionals are upon us. We’ll be hearing the squeak of sneakers on the gym floor here before you know it.

7) Despite the rash of injuries, it would seem the Bears have a decent chance to make the playoffs this year. Not sure how far Chicago can go with all of the injuries on the defensive front, but I’d bet they stay in it, right to the last weeks. As usual, get all of the Bears scoop here at the MDH from Hub Arkush.

8) Switching gears to baseball. I can’t imagine a more boring ALCS and NLCS. The pitching has dominated to the point that about all it’s good for is to help us all fall asleep at night.

Who needs Tylenol PM when you have Detroit, Boston, Los Angeles and St. Louis.

9) I have to admit I haven’t spent a lot of time with the NHL yet this year. I will have to slowly warm up to that one this winter it seems. Perhaps its the lack of a frantic nature to the season, the way it was last year during the strike-shortened year. The Blackhawks were 3-1-1 at press time. We’ll have plenty of time to catch up about them later.

10) As always, we welcome your feedback. Drop me a line and let me know your thoughts on the local football teams, the soccer team or whatever else and I’ll share them with everyone right here.

Peace.
