Coal City makes noise on senior night
COAL CITY – Needing a win to have a chance to make the IHSA playoffs Friday night, the Coal City football team had high expectations. Playing neighboring Reed-Custer on senior night, the Coalers knew it was on the shoulders of those upperclassmen.
The game was scoreless after one quarter of play, but both teams had long gains called back in the opening period – both negated by penalties.
Coal City finally got on the board with 6:22 before halftime when senior quarterback Brennen Shetina scored from 20 yards out. Lane Cowherd’s PAT kick made it 7-0 at the time. The big play on the drive was a 32-yard pass from Shetina to Littleton
A 54-yard punt return by Littleton then set up the next score for the Coalers. That gave the hosts choice field position at the Comets 24-yard line. Three plays later, Shetina hit Cowherd for a 24-yard touchdown and Cowherd’s kick made it 14-0.
That’s where the game stood at halftime.
Of course, the seniors were not above sharing the spotlight. With Littleton already chipping in, the sophomore provided the next score for the Coalers. It came off a tipped ball by senior Kasey Kaiser on a pass by R-C quarterback Mark Harper. Littleton returned it 17 yards for a touchdown and Cowherd’s kick made it 21-0 at 10:15 of the third.
Shetina then got a turnover on the next series on defense when he recovered a fumble. It came after Harper completed a 17-yard pass to Zach Zoltani. Shetina got a hop and returned it 38 yards to the R-C 30.
One play later, Shetina completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Cowherd. Cowherd’s PAT kick was true and the game sat at 28-0.
