Honoring Grundy County veterans

Husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. Brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. Friends and significant others.

Those are the people featured in the more than 900 photos in the “Honoring Our Military Heroes” special section inserted into today’s Morris Daily Herald. It is filled with pictures of Grundy County residents, past and present, who have donned a military uniform.

It is our way of saying “thank you” to those who believed in something larger than themselves and were willing to put their most precious commodity – their lives – on the line for others.

We sometimes forget we are allowed the rights and freedoms we so cherish because of the sacrifices made by the men and women who put on a military uniform. And on Monday, Veterans Day, we pause for a day to offer thanks.

While it’s a day often known for special retail sales, or a day off from work or school, it’s not about that.

Veterans Day can be traced to Nov. 11, 1918, the day World War I fighting between the Allied forces and Germany ended after an armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson said Nov. 11 would be Armistice Day to honor those who died during the war. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1938, and in 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day to honor all veterans.

There are events planned throughout Grundy County this weekend and Monday to commemorate and honor the dedication and sacrifice of veterans; you can find a list of them on page 3.

Monday is an opportunity to honor those who risked their lives for our nation. Taking a moment to say “thank you” is the very least of what we should do for them.
