U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, recently returned from an official trip to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Liberia, where he met with U.S. troops from Illinois and foreign leaders.

The trip included meetings with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as well as roundtable discussions with leading women’s rights groups and briefings with Western military officials, according to a news release from Kinzinger’s office.

“I was honored to have the chance to sit down with our brave men and women in uniform, with many of them from right here in Illinois,” Kinzinger said in the news release. “We’ve made incredible progress in the region and they deserve all the credit. As the troop drawdown in Afghanistan continues, it is vital that we remember the sacrifices so many have made and ensure future decisions do not endanger our hard-fought successes.”

Kinzinger’s trip began in Pakistan, where he toured the conflict-prone South Wazirstan region by helicopter.

He met with women who have experienced domestic violence and have been helped by U.S. aid programs, including one woman who had been severely injured by an acid attack.

In Afghanistan, the Congressional Delegation met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and senior military and government officials to discuss the U.S.-Afghanistan relationship. Kinzinger also visited U.S. troops at Camp Marmal, where they shared lunch and discussed the conditions for troops stationed overseas.

In Liberia, the group met with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and discussed the country’s economic and civil progress made over the last decade.
