COAL CITY – Coal City Fire Protection District firefighters getting ready to be sworn in as lieutenants were called away to a garage fire Wednesday night.

The fire department was called about 6:45 p.m. to a structure fire at Chestnut and Broadway streets. Upon arrival a fire was found in the garage at 105 E. Chestnut.

"There was heavy fire through the roof on arrival," said Lt. Nick Doerfler, spokesman for the Coal City fire department.

The fire was caused by combustible materials being stored close to an open flame heating source, he said. There was about $60,000 in damage to the garage and its contents. Firefighters managed to keep the fire contained to the garage, although the house at the location received smoke and heat damage, as well as water damage from firefighting tactics by firefighters.

The owners were in the process of remodeling the garage, Doerfler said. No vehicles were inside the garage. No one was injured in the incident.

Coal City was assisted by Braidwood, Wilmington, Morris, Gardner, Braceville and Manhattan fire departments. Mutual Aid Box Alarm System 15 investigators also were called.

Six of the fire department's firefighters were getting ready for a 7 p.m. ceremony to be certified as lieutenants when the call came through. Because of the ceremony many firefighters, including those who were off-duty, were at the department and able to get to the scene quickly.

Two of the firefighters who were going to be sworn in reported to the fire, Doerfler said. The remaining four were sworn in and the last two were when they returned from the incident.

The firefighters who are now lieutenants are Doerfler, Patrick Shroba, Chris Perry, Brandon Rinker, Brad Trotter and Brian Webster.
