Jeffrey K. Thorson, First Class Petty Officer, 45, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 in Hyattsville, Md., where he had lived for several years.
Jeffrey was born Feb. 27, 1968, in Ottawa, Ill., and attended the University of Southern Illinois. He later received his Bachelor of Science degree while serving as an enlisted Public Affairs Officer while on active duty in Italy from the University of New York.
Jeffrey’s service as a public relations officer with the U.S. Navy took him first to Command Headquarters in Bahrain, later to Sardenia, Italy and Reykjavik, Iceland. Jeff’s military career spanned 20 years and included a term with the U.S. Air force where he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in their public affairs office following 9/11.
Jeffrey’s civilian duties included serving on the Secretary’s Briefing Team at Homeland Security in D.C., and most recently with the Third Army, Joint Forces Intelligence Headquarters in the Middle East as an Intelligence Specialist. He had recently returned to Maryland to continue his duties with the Third Army and resume his commitment to the U.S. Naval Reserves as a specialist in their Africom Unit at Andrews Air Force Base.
Survivor’s include his mother, Nancy Diana Brown of Nashville, Tenn., his father, Kenneth (Alice) Thorson of Mercedes, Texas and formerly of Morris; a brother, Jeremy Thorson of Peru, Ill.; a half-sister, Kendra Yantis and family of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepbrother, Troy David and family of Middleton, Wis,; and a stepsister, Kari Bugg and family of Middleton, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Velma and Joseph Brown; his paternal grandparents, Irene and Jesse Thorson; and an uncle, Dennis Brown.
The visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Stavanger Lutheran Church in Stavanger, Ill., with services following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Philip Peterson will officiate.
Interment will follow in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and Morris Color Guard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Toys for Tots Foundation sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corp.
