Editor's note: As we continue to report on the aftermath of Sunday's tornado, the Morris Daily Herald intends to share stories of local residents affected by the tornado through a series of vignettes such as this one.

DIAMOND – Sheryl Franks’ dog, Charlie, hasn’t left her side since Sunday.

“I think he is still a little traumatized,” Franks said. “He won’t even go outside by himself to use the bathroom. I have to be with him.”

Charlie was at home with Sheryl, her husband, her son and her son’s best friend when the tornado hit their house at 820 Crystal Lane in Diamond Estates.

Sheryl said she was watching the storm chasers on television when her husband ran into the room.

“My husband said, ‘I see a funnel cloud, we got to go,’ ” Sheryl said. “We took off for the basement right then.”

The Franks and their dog crouched behind a couch in the basement and pulled a headboard above their heads. Sheryl could see through a window debris flying across the yard. Above, she could hear glass breaking.

“It was like being in a jet plane going really fast,” Sheryl said. “Our ears started popping and we could hear this whistling.”

They walked upstairs to find a hole in their roof, their cars damaged, their siding coming off and glass covering inside of their home of five years.

“The house is unlivable at this point with the amount of glass in there,” Sheryl said. “They will have to de-glass it before we can move back in.”

Sheryl said they are unsure where they will stay but are considering a hotel.

“We’ll need a dog-friendly hotel, of course,” Sheryl said. “I think we were very lucky. We’re still here and we’re still alive. that’s the most important.”
