With popular gun debate, tactical gear is trending

It is really amazing at what we can notice when we step back and try to look at things with fresh eyes. Sometimes we are so busy living in the world that we forget to stop and really look at what it is going on.

When we take a moment to see things from a distance we can often notice trends. These trends may be good or bad, but that is not what an analytical mind worries about. They just notice the trend and then someone else can decipher what it means.

I had one of these out-of-body perspective moments this week. I was browsing through one of the latest outdoors magazines that showed up in my mailbox and I noticed something. I turned the page and there it was again. I flipped yet another page and sure enough, there was another one. I stopped and counted.

Within one traditional outdoors magazine that deals with fishing, hunting and shooting, there were 25 ads or articles that could be placed under the heading of “tactical.” What do I mean by that?

The term tactical is a very generic word that often refers to anything from clothing, knives, firearms, flashlights or any other equipment that can be categorized as looking like M&P; military and police.

This type of gear and clothing is popular right now. I’m sure there are many reasons for this and most of us probably have a few opinions on the subject. The fact is though, people like the tactical look.

Many varmint hunters have turned from the traditional rifle body style to the more trendy “black gun” look. These guns still are chambered in the popular varmint rounds. The body of the gun just looks different.

The flurry of excitement about the states concealed carry law also has created a frenzy of interest, as well. Everywhere I go people are talking about it. Have you taken the classes yet? What do you think? It goes on-and-on.

I’ll admit. I think the tactical stuff is pretty awesome, too. There is, though, a responsibility that goes with it. Not everyone in the general public understands the differences between what we can buy and use as sportsman and a true M&P product.

We are living in an era of passionate if not fiery debate over what types of gun control laws should exist. The topic is in the news almost on a weekly basis. As with most hot topics, the well-informed voter is a much better voter. It is easy to take an all-or-nothing approach when it comes to this topic. When people walk into the local sporting goods store and see rows of tactical looking gear the debate often fires up again.

How long will the tactical trend continue? That is hard to tell. I think it is probably going to be here for quite some time. Manufacturers are meeting the demand by offering a huge variety of products that consumers are crazy for. The stuff sells and when a product sells it is going to be copied. Each company is vying for its share of the market.

I even saw an advertisement for a tactical water bottle. Seriously. It wasn’t the backpack bladder type that both hunters and soldiers use, it was quite literally a water bottle. That is how much people like this stuff. I couldn’t believe it.
