Coal City's Nick Peters is blocked by Serena's Cal Mason during the Coal City Tournament on Tuesday. Coal City defeated Serena, 62-42.

COAL CITY – With 13 points in the first half from Nick Peters and eight more from Segal Arias in the first 16 minutes, the Coal City Coalers had built a comfortable lead at home in their own turkey tournament.

That was just the tip of the iceberg for the Coalers and Peters as Coal City turned in a 62-42 victory over Serena on Tuesday.

At the start of the second half, Peters put in a basket and then put down a two-handed dunk less than a minute later en route to scoring 21 points on the night.

“[The Huskers] were trying to reverse the ball and my guy was going to the top,” Peters said. “I saw him and rotated over, jumped it, got a hand on it and had a wide open court in front of me.”

Peters’ 21 points came despite not playing about eight minutes in the second half because Coalers coach Brad Boresi subbed liberally halfway through the third and fourth quarters.

The dunk by Peters got almost as much applause from the crowd as late-game baskets by Isaiah Washington and Cody Krug.

“It was a great game because everyone got minutes tonight and got to contribute,” Peters said.

“It’s always to get the first win out of the way,” Brad Boresi said. “We were slow at the start and trailed 7-2 at one point but we woke up. There was just a slow pace to the game tonight. “

A pace that still enabled everyone on the bench quality minutes.

“Those guys work just as hard in practice as the starters,” Boresi said. “It’s nice to get a start like this where everyone has the chance to contribute.”

Coal City will play at 7 p.m. Friday night against GSW.
