Morris girls beat Somonauk, Coal City wins Beecher Tournament

In girls basketball action in recent days, Morris picked up a nonconference win over Somonauk and Coal City finished off the Beecher Tournament championship run by beating Peotone.

Morris 75,

Somonauk 18

Morris got the nonconference win behind 19 points, seven rebounds and six steals from Julie Jurasits.

Also for the Redskins, Jessica Ponce had 12 points and three steals and Emily Burling had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals.

In the sophomore game, Morris won 38-29 behind 11 points and nine rebounds by Ryan Friend. Janelle Brehm added nine points and Devon Pacheco had eight points.

Coal City 54,

Peotone 40

The Lady Coalers won the Beecher Tournament by knocking off the Blue Devils by 14.

“This was a good, tough win to close out the tournament,” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “Our girls did a nice job of answering Peotone’s runs with some key baskets tonight and I think that was the difference.”

Britta Spelde and Emily Halliday each had 14 points in the win for the Coalers and both made the all-tournament team. Spelde was voted Most Outstanding Player. Nicole Borgetti and Brittany Jezik also made the all-tournament team.

Fieldcrest 47,

Newark 31

Kristine Zitt had 14 points and Rachel Lape had six point in the third quarter in the loss by the Lady Norse.

“This was a closer game than it looks. We struggled with their pressure but gave ourselves a chance at the end,” Newark coach Brian Holman said. “Kristine was awesome inside and games like this will only help us in the future.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Illiana Christian 83,

Reed-Custer 64

The Comets were led by Travis Schoonover’s 17 points, while Tyler Allen had 13 points and Brent Headrick had 10 points.

FRESHMEN

Pontiac 39,

Morris 38

Ricky Delfavero had 12 points and six rebounds in the loss and Zach Chapman had 11 points and nine rebounds.

In the ‘B’ game, Morris won 21-13.

BOYS BOWLING

Minooka 3,300,

Plainfield East 2,863

The Indians picked up a Southwest Prairie Conference win over the Bengals.

Leading Minooka was the 693 series by freshman Kai Devine, although Jack Russell ended with a 666 and Zach Segatto had a 657.

Also bowling for the Indians were: Chris Dombrowski (622), Dylan Pickett (605) and John Kauffmann (604).

In JV action, Minooka won 3,056-2,139 behind a high series from Alex Guglielmucci (678).

Saratoga 40,

Seneca 19

For Morris, Tyler Spiezio had 12 points, Cortez James nine and Kyle Litchfield had seven in the win.

In the seventh grade game, Morris won, 36-21, behind 21 points from by Jacob Overbeck.
