Katie Friend (with ball) is one of two seniors on the Morris girls basketball team this winter. Friend has taken a leadership role with the predominantly young team.

OTTAWA – Last year the Morris girls basketball team won six games. It was seven the year before that. This year, the Redskins are currently sitting with a 5-5 record after the first round of the Ottawa Christmas Tournament.

Considering the team only has two seniors – Katie Friend and Jade Fischer – things are looking up for first-year coach Kate Carey.

On Friday afternoon in Kingman Gym in Ottawa, Friend agreed to engage the MDH as this week’s question and answer session.

Q. OK, we’re at the Christmas Tournament and it’s not exactly the halfway point for the season but it’s a mile post for everyone to check where they are at. Where would you say this team is right now? Do you think the team is where it should be?

A. I think we’ve made a lot of progress, but there is always room for improvement. There is still a long ways to go. We can always do better than we are doing. There are things we can improve on. But I am happy with the way that we’ve come together as a team and I like the intensity which we play with. We just have to clean a few things up.”

Q. Do you remember how many wins last year’s team had?

A. It was either six or seven. [It was six].

Q. So, you guys have won five games this year and almost reached last year’s win total already. What has been the biggest difference between last year and this year?

A. Intensity wise, I don’t really see a difference but we have been able to score a lot more. That has helped us. We’ve also improved individually and that has also helped us as a team.

Q. A lot of the players on the team seemed to have matured from last year. Julie (Jurasits) is playing really well, don’t you think?

A. Julie has come a long way. She’s done a great job.

Q. What are the keys to success from now until the remainder of the season?

A. Definitely defense and we need to keep up the intensity. Scoring wise, we are doing pretty well and we have to keep that up too. Play with heart and passion.

Q. What would it take to make this season a success. Is it a wins and losses thing or is it continual improvement or what?

A. Obviously the point of the game is to win, but we also want to improve as a team. We’re always looking to improve, which we want to do, too.
