Veterans install wreaths on graves of service men, women
Ton Sasgen, a Mazon resident, along with a group of men who served aboard U.S. submarines, assisted recently in the installation of 6,000 wreaths on the graves of service men and women at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Sasgen is a member of USS Chicago Base, which consists of men who served on U.S. Navy Submarines. The group meets the first Saturday of the month in Tinley Park at 1 p.m. for lunch.
In addition to volunteer work at the cemetery, the group is involved in community service with a strong leaning toward veteran activities, including visiting prior servicemen and women at veteran’s homes. Sasgen and his shipmates assist in tours of the German submarine, U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Anyone who is qualified in submarines or has an avid interest in submarines is invited to join this group. Contact Don at 708-479-5150 or DJSCHLEGS@aol.com for information, or visit www.ussvi.org/base/USSChicago.asp
